ジンバブエではコレラによる死者が５％を超えており、状況が悪化している。コレラは汚染された水や悪い衛生状態によって広がるため、きれいな水の供給は不可欠であるが、国の経済が破綻し、予防や感染した患者への適切な対応がとれない状況である。国民の病気への抵抗力は弱まっており、貧困や食糧危機、エイズなどの要因が問題をさらに大きくしている。国際赤十字社では募金をよびかけ、医薬品の供給や安全な水、衛生面の整備、衛生や教育を促進する運動を行っているが、近隣諸国にコレラが広まっていく懸念もあり、状況を注意深く監視している。
In Zimbabwe, the fatality rate is very high for cholera which is a easily prevented and curable disease. And the situation is rapidly deteriorating. Because the nation is such a dysfunctional society that even the simplest measures are out of reach because of the economic crisis. Besides risk factors such as poverty, food insecurity and HIV/AIDS are adding to the problems. Therefore, the Red Cross Federation launched the appeal to provide medical supplies, to increase safe water and sanitaion, and to promote a huge campaign to try to prevent people from falling ill. Furthermore, it is closely monitoring the worrying situation in case Zimbabwe's cholera outbreak could become a regional crisis.
